Teaching Assistant for Calculus I (Math 135), Spring 2024, Rutgers-Newark.
–Recitation Session Schedule: All Friday, Smith Hall 244.
Session 1: 9:00-9:55 a.m.
Session 2: 10:00-10:55 a.m.
Session 3: 12:00-1:00 p.m.
Session 4: 1:00-2:00 p.m.
Session 5: 2:30-3:25 p.m.
–Quizzes will take place roughly biweekly to triweekly. For more details, please see the course syllabus and notes for the first recitation session.
–All the past quizzes will be distributed for the last time on April 12.
–Frequent Q&A:
Q1: Will the practice quiz cover ALL types/formats and contents of questions?
A1: We make no such promises, and you should be aware that we are not responsible for doing so. The practice quiz will surely help a lot, however.
Q2: Can I use a calculator in quizzes/exams?
A2: No. The graphing calculator is strictly prohibited, and so is the normal calculator as well. The restriction to normal calculators, however, is more formality than substance, since I can promise you they will do you no help in quizzes as the numbers are indeed easy to calculate.
Q3: When does the next quiz take place?
A3: Please refer to the syllabus. Course arrangements will strictly follow the syllabus unless otherwise specified.
Q4: Can I get extra points after seeing the grading on my quiz?
A4: You can come to me if you REALLY think you are treated mistakenly/unfairly, and please prepare a valid argument. Be HONEST to yourself. I refuse to justify in any grades improvement-seeking conversations without logic.
Q5: Can I make up for quizzes/homework assignments?
A5: You can choose to switch into another section if you have situations on the quiz day. Making up for quizzes after the quiz day is not accepted in general, but please do consult the professor if you have emergencies. There is no make up for the failure in a specific quiz. We will drop the lowest grade and one single failure does not mean the failure in the final grade, and vice versa. For homework assignments, you can still finish it in a reasonable period after the deadline.
Q6: Form of attendance?
A6: Initially we used Qwickly Attendance; but now I found a better way is just to check the ones who did not collect their quizzes after each distribution (usually takes place on the week after the quiz). There is no attendance on quiz days, as there is no such necessity of marking so.

All maths courses are welcome. Just come.
Tips for group sessions: please get your questions prepared and present representative ones of them to me at the beginning of the session, thus we could find the common problems of everybody and try to show the solution process to all the participants, usually by starting with a micro-review of the class, in order to maximize the effectiveness of the tutorial. (The problems need not to be concrete ones, those related to conceptual understanding are more than welcome as well. Still it’s highly recommended that they come along with examples in homework assignments.)
